Although it may seem strange, one of the ways this can be done is through anime fanfiction. Spinning stories of the histories and relationships of such characters – who are simultaneously idiosyncratic and archetypal – is surprisingly satisfying.

The relationships in the stories are varied, as are the couples and the sexual orientations. Some are one-sided, and others requited; some express friendship, some love, and some desires healthy (and otherwise).
